No to Salone but I’m still in the Zona…

Yes, it’s that time of year again when the chic high end furniture industry goes into overdrive and we all go into invitation overload. Daily, slick Flash invites drop into our inboxes pleading with us, enticing us and sometimes even outright bribing us to visit their shiny, shiny stands to see all the new completely fabulous, neverbeenseenbefore designs… Now you may gather from my ‘been there, seen it all, got the t-shirt’ kinda tone that I’m lucky enough to do an annual trip to the Salone del Mobile in Milan and view it simply as part of my job. An interesting part I’ll grant you and it even sounds glamorous, but honestly, Milan is not the most picturesque of cities in Italy, and the prices quadruple during the Salone, so even if you can get there, you can’t afford to do anything really fun… But this year, the one year I decided to give it a miss because I ‘did’ the fairs in Europe during January, the one year I thought I’d stay here and mind the shop, the one year the invites didn’t make me sorry that I wasn’t going – this was the year the Hobo Lantern comes out. It’s just not fair. A portable light source, the Hobo Lantern is apparently  inspired by the urban nightlife of Zona Tortona during Design Week. Using an energy-efficient LED light source Hobo glows through a delicate pattern of translucent fibres. And I LOVE IT! But wait, what’s this I see? It seems none of us need to get on a plane at all. Hobo Lantern will be available on molostore.com on April 12, 2011 – the first day of Design Week in Milan! YES! Just seven more days to go…
